FAQ
Having Discomfort: If you are visiting with a specific problem (pain or sensitivity on a particular tooth) then that is exactly what we are going to address that day. Dr. Hemphill or one of his associates will deal with your pain issue immediately and then discuss future dental needs with you another time after your immediate need has been addressed.
No Discomfort: If you are new to West Hill Family Dental and not having any immediate dental need, you will likely be visiting for a cleaning. You will meet with one of our amazing hygienists your first visit and become a patient or record with our office. In addition to your cleaning you will likely have an exam by one of our dentists as well as have some x-rays taken. You will spend some time with Dr. Hemphill or one of his associates discussing any and all dentally related concerns you may have.If you have any type of PPO plan the answer is Yes. We also accept and participate with Connecticut’s Child Husky Program.
At minimum you should have your teeth cleaned by a professional at least twice a year. Under some circumstances you may need to have your teeth cleaned up to 4 times per year. Dr. Hemphill and his staff will discuss the necessary treatment you will need.
You should be brushing your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Ideally you would be using an electric tooth brush from Oral B or Sonicare as these two types do an amazing job at keeping the plaque on your teeth to a minimum.
You should be flossing your teeth at least 2-3 times per week correctly. In our experience many patients “floss” their teeth but they are not performing the technique properly. Dr. Hemphill and his staff will make sure that you have all the tools necessary to take great care of your teeth and gums.
We are unique in two major ways. First, we have a strong understanding of what your insurance carrier is going to cover. We take the time to investigate each insurance policy from each family to make sure we have a strong understanding of what is covered and how you can benefit from your policy. Second, and most important, the philosophy of the practice is very preventative in nature. We do our fair share of fillings, crowns and root canals. However, our major focus is to teach you how to stay out of Dr. Hemphill’s treatment room. It’s a win/win this way. Dr. Hemphill gets to save his neck and back and you get to keep your teeth looking just the way you made them years ago.
Most of your regular dental work will be completed in this office once you’re an established patient. Occasionally, there are some types of treatment that are referred out to specialists in the surrounding area.
If you had a filling competed by Dr. Hemphill in the last few hours, you were likely numb. Most fillings need anesthesia for most people. If you are currently numb, you should not plan to try and eat for a few hours until your anesthesia wears off and you can feel again. You can expect to have cold sensitivity on the teeth you had the cavities filled for a few weeks. In the months to come, your teeth will become less sensitive and feel more normal.
